Joseph R. Billups
Joseph was born c. 1803-1804 at North Carolina. This is from the 1870 Census.
Joseph R. Billups posted bond Oct. 15, 1830, at Perquimans County, for the marriage of Timothy Walton, (son of Timothy, II and Lucy Billups), to Nancy Ann Barclift. Ceremony Oct. 21, 1830, witness John Wood, as recorded in family bible.[1]
Joseph R. Billups posted on 13 May 1833, at Perquimans, North Carolina, surety of $1,833 for his marriage to Marey Heusen or Neusen? (transcribers thought Marey Amsom) difficult to read)[2]
Joseph R. Billups married on 24 September 1841, at Perquimans County, North Carolina, to Sophia White.[3]

The case of Joseph R. Billups and Wife vs Willis D. Riddick and Wife was concerning Sophia, and her sister, Mary Riddick, who inherited property, per the will of Jesse Stallings, once Priscilla Stallings had deceased. Apparently, Willis Riddick was supposed to administer the estate by selling slaves and dividing the money. Commissioners were appointed to follow through.[4]
The 1850 Census found Joseph R Billups living at the "Up Riva District" of Perquimans County, North Carolina, age 46, farmer with $6,500 value in real estate, with his wife, Sophia, age 43, and children: Robert L Billups, age 15, Esther E Billups, age 13, Ann E Billups , age 10, Joseph R Billups, age 6, Humphry I Billups, age 3, James M Billups, age 0.[5] Also living with the family were: John P White, age 19, Pleasant White, age 15, and Jordan White, age 10 (siblings of Sophia's?)
The 1860 Census found the family still living at the Up River District, Perquimans, North Carolina.[6] This time, Sarah Eason, age 47, was living with them. Robert, Jr. and Esther had left their childhood home.
The 1870 Census found Joseph R. Billups living at Belvidere Township, Perquimans County, North Carolina, age 66, farmer, $1,000 value in real estate, with his wife, Sophia, age 63, and children: Joseph R Billups, age 25, Humphrey Billups, age 23, James Billups, age 21.[7] Also living with the family were Susan Henley, age 37, domestic servant, and Arvilla Henley, age 7. All were born in North Carolina, and all adults could read and write, except for Susan Henley.[7]
