Biography

Mary Bingham was the daughter of John Bingham and was born in County Down Ireland in about 1842.

She married at about the age of 17 to John Bronte. The wedding was on 29 August 1859. Her husband was a pharmaceutical chemist (and apparently a cousin of-sorts to the Bronte sisters).

The couple had children, including Alexander, born in 1866[1] and Joseph in 1869.[2] They also had a daughter, Catherine Mary Bronte.

They emigrated to New Zealand in 1887, arriving in Wellington on the SS Tainui. Mary Bronte would have been 45 years old, and her husband was in his fifties when they arrived in Wellington. Their children were mostly grown, and ready to take up occupations. Alexander became a doctor. Their daughter Catherine married a chemist a year after they arrived in 1888, and young Joseph Charles was about 17 or 18.

Mary and her husband moved to Pukekohe, near Auckland, probably to be near their son Alexander, who had a medical practice there.

Mary's husband John died in 1910 in Pukekohe, and Mary died four years later in 1914. She died at her son, Alexander's residence, in Pukekohe. [3] Mary is buried in the Pukekohe Cemetery.

The couple's headstone reads:

HIC JACET, John Bronte, Native of Lacken Co. Down, Ireland, Died on 11th August 1910 aged 76 Years, and his wife Mary Bingham, also native of Lacken, Co. Down, Ireland, Died on 1 September 1914 aged 72 Years.

At the time of her death, Mary considered her married daughter well provided for, and also did not feel the need to leave her estate to Alexander. Instead the whole of her estate of 654 pounds [4] was left to her other son Joseph Charles Bronte who was residing in Johannesburg at the time.
