Bingham. - Francis Bingham died last Saturday at the home of his daughter. Mrs. F. Deming. at Wells River at the age of 88 years. Mr. Bingham was born in the town of Goshen, N. H., March 1, 1799. He learned the trade of cabinet maker at Charlestown, N. H., where he married Sophia Grout in 1820 and moved to Lancaster the year following, remaining there ten years working at his trade, and in the face of many discouragements he built up quite a successful business. This he disposed of in 1831 and moved to St. Johnsbury and re-engaged in his old business which he followed for two years or until 1833, at which time he was engaged by the Messrs. Fairbanks as superintendent
of the finishing department of their scale works where he remained for 49 years until his advanced age obliged, him to retire from active affairs. Mr. Bingham will be well remembered as a good citizen. He was an active member of the South church, identified with Christian work, honest and upright and one who commanded the respect and esteem of all who knew him.
Modest and unassuming he was rarely prominent in public places but always performed his part in any undertaking with credit to himself and to the community. Funeral services were held in Wells River after which the remains were brought here for interment,
a brief service being held at the grave conducted by Rev. E. J. Ranslow of Wells River and Rev. Edward Fairbanks of St. Johnsbury. Mrs. Bingham died in St. Johnsbury some four or five years ago.[1]
