Biography

This profile is part of the Bingham Name Study.

Richard Gerald Ava Bingham, the seventh and youngest son of John Bingham and Matilda Ward, was born on 8 March 1896 at Bangor Castle, County Down, Ireland.

He fought in World War I and gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force.

He died 8 August 1918, while on a low level patrol flying over Northern France. Sadly, his plane and a fellow serviceman's collided mid air and both pilots were killed.
"Lieut. the Hon. Richard Gerald Ava Bingham, R.A.F., killed in action on the Western Front, was theyoungest son of the late Lord clanmorris, a nephew of Mrs. Albert Brassey (of Heythrop), and a great nephew of Mrs. St John Legh Clewes (of Cheltenham). Born in 1896 he came to Cheltenham College in 1911. He had been attached to the Royal Air Force for a year. He was one of five brothers serving, the most distinguisghed of whom is Commander the Hon. Barry Bingham, R.N., who was awared theVictoria Cross for his services at the Jutland Battle."[1]
"The Hon. Richard Gerald Ava Bingham, R.A.F., has been killed on the Western front. The gallant officer was the youngest son of the late Lord Clanmorris, and brother of the present peer of that title. Born in 1896, he was educated at Cheltenham, and joined the Royal Air Force just a year ago. He was one of five brothers in the King’s service, one of whom, Commander the Hon. Barry Bingham, won his V.C. at the Battle of Jutland."[2]

He was buried at Triangle Cemetery, Inchy-en-Artois, Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.[3] [4]
