Biography

Thomas was baptised at Thornton, Bradford, Yorkshire, on 23 June 1816: Thomas son of John and Lucy Binns, Thornton, wool-comber, baptised by P. Bronte minister (Patrick Bronte).[1][2]

He married Elizabeth Wilkinson on 12 October 1835 at Bingley, Yorkshire. Thomas Binns of Cullingworth, comber, Elizabeth Wilkinson of Cullingworth, spinster, both marked. witnesses Kennyon Murgatroyd and Thomas Smith.[3] They had children Wilkinson and James born 1836 and 1838, but by the time of the 1841 census Elizabeth was living on her own with the children at Upper Manywells, near Cullingworth.[4] She did not give an occupation but marked herself as "Independent". Thomas may have been away in the army as there is a military record for Thomas Binns born at Thornton, woolcomber, who joined up on 18 January 1838 aged 21. He served over 4 years in the 74th Foot, including two years in the West Indies, and was discharged on health grounds on 12 July 1842. If this is the same Thomas, it seems he abandoned Elizabeth as he joined up around the time James was born, probably before, and stated he was not married.[5]

Elizabeth died in 1847 and Thomas remarried on 1 July 1850 at Bradford: Thomas Binns, comber, 34, widower, Manningham, father John Binns, comber. Hannah Burn, 34, widow, Manningham, father John Hutchinson, comber. Both marked. Witnesses William Holmes and Ephraim Smith.[6] Hannah had two children of her own, John Hutchinson and Maria Burns, and the following year they were living with all four children at Regent Square, Bradford. Thomas's birthplace is shown as Thornton and all the children as Wilsden. Hannah's father John was also living with them.[7] They went on to have three more children together, Harriet, Mary, and Thomas.
