Mary was born in 1879[1] in Greenoak Crossing near Eastrington, Yorkshire, England, and was baptised in the parish church in 1880. She was the daughter of Henry Binns and Ellen Stamp;[2] the family lived in Greenoak in 1881[3] and Mary's mother died later that year at the age of 29.[4]
