Biography
Glen was born in 1941 at Allawah Private Hospital in Semaphore, South Australia. He is the youngest of the three sons of John (Jack) Birchby and Florence Jean Duell (Jean). [1]
The family lived at 15 Devon Street, Largs Bay, South Australia, close to the beach where the boys spent much leisure time summer and winter.
Glen was educated at Largs Bay Primary School and Woodville High School before going on to study Architecture at what is now the University of South Australia, graduating in 1968.
He was registerd as an Architect in 1970 and was employed first by the South Australian Government, then by a Glenelg property development company, then by a private architectural partnership practice in Parkside, before establishing his own architectural practice at Unley Park in 1975. The practice was known as Glen Birchby & Associates, eventually becoming an incorporated company named Birchby Consulting Pty Ltd.
In 1968 Glen married Margaret Charles at St Matthews Anglican Church, Marryatville, and they set up home, at first in a flat at Rose Park, then purchased an old farm-house on a large block at 18 Alison Street, Glenelg North, close to Glen's developer-employer. Within the year Glen was asked to join the Parkside architectural partnership, so the Glenelg house was sold and Glen and Margaret bought a blue-stone villa at 46 Westall Street, Unley Park, to be closer to work.
In 1973 their only son Mark was born.
In 1991 the family moved to Torrens Park, which was close to Mark's school at Scotch College, and was an ideal property and location from which to run a home office, which Glen now did.
In the latter part of Glen's professional life he confined his work to consulting on construction and design advice rather than preparation of building designs and documentation for construction, as previously.
With Mark (a licensed master builder) Glen carried out a number of residential developments and alterations, which allowed him to continue to exercise his interest in architectural design.
Glen closed the practice and retired from work in 2015.
Glen's interests, apart from architecture, have been classical music, reading, Family History research, and travel to Europe, particularly France and England, where Glen and Margaret enjoyed a number of vacations focused on visiting famous houses and their gardens.

With regard to the above profile, I have now discovered that Sarah's maiden name is Palin. Information to show this has been added in the biography and research notes. Please would you change her Last Name of Birth to Palin or add me to the profile's Trusted List so that I can make the change for you?
Thanks, Gwyneth

We have not received a reply from you regarding the message we recently sent about England Project. We hope you are OK. We realise that your interests could have moved on, and so if we do not hear from you by the end of December we will presume that you wish to be removed from the Project. You will be welcome to rejoin us at a later time if you wish.
Joan, Amy & Lizzie.
It's that time of the year again: check-in time! As England Project Leaders, we like to check in with you every six months or so to see how things are progressing. Back in May, we didn't ask for a response due to the rapid emergence of Covid-19 because we understood that people's lives were changing rapidly. While we are still living in a Covid world, we do need to hear back from you this time around.
First of all, how are you doing? What are you currently working on? Are you happy with the team(s) you're in, or would you like to change things up?
Secondly, we're looking for some feedback on the Google Group and our Discord server. Do you use either or both of these? If you don't use either, why not? Do you have any suggestions on how we can improve participation and collaboration, either generally or for you personally?
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Joan, Amy & Lizzie.
Your England Leaders are completing the six monthly check in with all team members. I wanted to thank you for your work on English Profiles. These are unprecedented and difficult times, and we understand as Project Leaders that your situation may have changed somewhat in the last few months. What we are all able to/ wish to contribute on Wikitree has changed. Please let me know if you are happy with your current role and team choice or if you wish to do something additional or different. Thank you again on behalf of all the project leaders for everything you do!
Kindest Regards, Amy Utting

On behalf of the England Project Leaders we're carrying out a check-in to see how all the members are doing and taking the opportunity to thank you for all your hard work over the past six months.
