Richard Byrd was the son of Richard Byrd, Sr. (1717–1808) and Sarah Jones (1729–1810).

He was a soldier in colonial Virginia, appearing on the militia list at Glade Hollow Fort in Fincastle County (present-day Scott County). He fought in Dunsmore's War under Captain Daniel Smith and Lt. William Edmondson. And he was also present at the Battle of Point Pleasant in October, 1774.

About 1774, he married to Elizabeth Woods Buster in Fincastle, Botetourt County, Virginia Colony. They had these (probable) children:
