William after his birth went to live with his grandmother Mary in Gt Dunmow. Later he worked as a Gardener for Lord Cowdrey and raised pheasants as he put it "for gentlemen to shoot." He later went to stay with his brother Edward as assistant in Grocery Shop in St Albans, then helped another brother Albert in his Off license in London.

After his marriage they moved to Strood in Kent where he worked as a gardener. They had 13 children but only 4 survived.
