Samuel Osman Bird/Burd Born in Farmington, CT and migrated to Oneida County, NY prior to arriving in Canton Township, Michigan by 1824 whereupon he became the first land owner in Canton Township via BLM by purchasing 80 acres on Joy road for $1.25/acre. HIs son Philander also came to Michigan at that time an bought his own adjacent 80 acres and built his home there by 1826 which is still being lived in as of 2015 on Joy Road adjacent to the hugh School property.
The name spelling is interesting: Samuel was born a BIrd, but now on his headstone it is BUrd. We believe his son Zenas was the one who changed the spelling to differentiate himself from his UNCLE Zenas who also had two sons as Zenas Jr. and Zenas II. All four of them lived in little Oneida NY prior to migrating to Michigan in 1824. Zenas purchased 80 acres 1/2 mile west of his brother Philander's and Father's properties on Joy Road in Canton. All three were farmers and Zenas and Philander also owned a sawmill on different property south of their homes/farmsteads. Samuel Osman's residence on Joy Road in Canton would have been destroyed in order to build Plymouth-Salem High School or sometime prior. Questions can be addressed to the profile manager, Jack Burd
