Biography

Levi Bird was a Canadian First Peoples and member of the Metis Nation.

Levi was born about 1813 (some sites say 1801). He was the son of James Bird.

The 1832 Red River Census has Levi at age 20. 1838 Census he is listed as 25

9 Nov 1832 Levi married Jane THOMAS, daughter of Sarah (CREE) and Governor Thomas THOMAS (1766-1828).

  • 2. 1834 SOPHIA BIRD (m. John KNIGHT)
  • 3. 1841 HENRY BIRD (m. Chloe LOUIS)

The Red River Settlement census of 1833 Levi is 20 (which says birth 1813 rather than 1801 as often noted) and married, and owns a cow.

In 1840 he is 47, living with his wife, 2 sons and a daughter and has 2 female servants. He has now 8 acres of land with multiple farm animals.

In 1841 Jane (nee THOMAS) BIRD died in Red River. Widowed 1838/ 1840. His son Henry's Scrip, lists his birth date as 1844 and his mother is a Betsy Taylor, Cree Indian. [1] Child:

Children with Nancy Fox (1800-1870) [2] Note; her name does not appear in any documents apart from one, but dates for these children tend to fit She is also not recorded in any of the 1831-1870 Red River census. Children

  • 1845 JAMES BIRD (m. Emilie BOUCHER) His Scrip affidavit later indicated his mother as Nancy of unknown origins
  • 1860 CHARLES BIRD

Census of 1870 in St Andrews:Widow Nancy BIRD (age 70) and son Charles [3]

He passed away about 12 Jan 1864.
