Nancy was born in 1925. She was the daughter of Sidney Bird and Mary Germany. She passed away in 2004. [1]

Obituary

Nancy Bird Luikart, a native of Baton Rouge, was born Sept. 16, 1925, and died surrounded by her family at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at St. James Place.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of more than 50 years, William M. Luikart; her parents, Sidney A. and Irene G. Bird; and her brother, Sidney A. Bird Jr.

She was the devoted wife of her physician husband, keeping the home fires burning while shepherding their four children.

Her husband was proud of her gracious entertaining and they enjoyed hosting parties for family and friends. Many of her recipes have been printed in The Levert Family's Favorite Recipes.

She attended LSU before leaving to enter Touro School of Nursing in New Orleans. She practiced nursing at Hotel Dieu and Charity Hospital of New Orleans while her husband was completing his medical schooling.

In recognition of her community service, she was named a "Beautiful Activist" in 1972, (now called Volunteer Activist). She was a longtime member of the Louisiana Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross and served as president. She served as volunteer nurse for the Louisiana Heart Association and the Special Olympics, volunteered for the Baton Rouge Speech and Hearing Foundation and was co-chairman of Mad Hatters. She was president of the Baton Rouge American Heart Auxiliary, member of the Junior League, Delta Delta Delta sorority, the Baton Rouge Assembly and a member of St. Joseph Cathedral.

Nancy was a longtime supporter of St. Joseph's Academy and was very proud of her presidencies of Catholic High School and St. Joseph's Academy Mother's Club.

Pallbearers at the funeral will be Louis Benedetto, Richard Bird, Tom Butler, Tom Hayes, Jim Richard and Miles Williams. Honorary pallbearer will be Ken Luikart.

The Luikart family will always be grateful to Cynthia Dixon and Gurlie Simien for their years of loving care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic High School, 808 Hearthstone Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70806 or St. Joseph's Academy, 3015 Broussard, Baton Rouge, LA 70808.

Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Cathedral, 412 North St., at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2004, concelebrated by the Rev. John Carville and the Rev. Gerard Young. Visitation at the cathedral from 8:30 a.m. until service. [2]
