Robert Birdwell was the first child and only son born to George Birdwell and his first wife. There were two daughters born to this union as well. All the other children were from George Birdwell's second marriage to Mary L Looney.

Robert Birdwell and his father along with brothers served during the Revolutionary War [2] ; brothers Moses, Benjamin and Robert also served during the War of 1812. In the War of 1812 Robert Birdwell was a Corporal in the 4th Regiment (Steele's) W. Tennessee Military.
Robert Birdwell married Ellen Sanford. There are presently two known children of Robert, William Birdwell (1766 - 1823) and John Birdwell (1772 - ____).

1780 • George Birdwell (c1721-1781) moved his family from Virginia to Sullivan County, North Carolina now Tennessee about 1780.
8 March 1790 • Robert Birdwell's residence in Hawkins, North Carolina[4]
1806 • Robert Birdwell "of Sullivan County" was shown on a deed filed in Smith County, Tennessee in 1806.
1811• Robert Birdwell was on a deed filed in Sullivan County, Tennessee on 13 December 1811.
1814 • Robert Birdwell appears as a witness to a deed in Giles County, Tennessee by March 1814.
1815 • Robert Birdwell's estate papers filed in Giles Co, Tennessee in 15 Sep 1815. No Will has ever been found for Robert Birdwell to prove his children, but circumstantial evidence indicates they were William, Alexander, James and John.[5]
