Note: SOUTH AUSTRALIA REPRESENTED AT PARAGUAY
This State was well represented in the company that sought the new Utopia in Paraguay, among the num ber being several members of the family of Mr. Charles Birks, formerly a well-known farmer of Wandearah.
They included his father (founder of the firmof Birks-Chemists Ltd., and a brother of the one who established the business of Charles Birks & Co., Ltd., drapers), his mother, three brothers. and three sisters.
Another who joined the party was Mr. H. S. Taylor, subsequently pro prietor of the Renmark "Pioneer" and an early member of South Australian Provincial Press Association.
Mr. Charlie Birks was well known for his experiments with feed and cereals on his Wandearah property, where also he reared finehorse stock which attracted much attention and gained many prizes in competitions conducted by the successful Pirie Horse Shows in the years prior to World War1. After he left here he did well with sheep on subterranean clover country in Mount Barker district.
He was married three times, his first wife being a sister of Mr. A. L. P. Goode.
His last years were spent on a property in Murray district. When he died his remains were cremated, and, in accordancewith his expressed desire, the ashes were distributed along the river from a plane piloted by his son, Henry Napier Birks. [1]
