Biographical Note / Administrative History Georges-Étienne Jacques was the son of Joseph and Marie Anne Turcot. He was notarized on June 15, 1859. On October 18, 1859, he married Hélène Birs Desmarteau in Saint-Hyacinthe and on January 16, 1871, he married Caroline Piuze as a second marriage to Saint-Christophe-d'Arthabaska. From 1859 to 1879, the notary Jacques worked in Trois-Rivières, Saint-Paul-de-Chester, Saint-Hyacinthe and Nicolet. Conservation History / Immediate Source of Acquisition This Registry was the subject of two installments at the Center des Archives Nationales du Quebec, Mauricie-Bois-Francs. In February 1976, the Court House of Trois-Rivières paid the documents covering the years 1859 to 1864 and 1876 to 1879. In March 1984, the Court House of Arthabaska paid the documents covering the years 1864 to 1873. These two payments were the subject of separate series until November 1995 when we brought them together under the same rating. Scope and content This series gathers 2273 notarial minutes of the Georges-Étienne Jacques registry as well as a chronological repertoire in 2 volumes. The minutes are numbered from 1 to 2615. From 1859 to 1879, the notary Jacques practiced in Trois-Rivières (from July 4, 1859 to April 9, 1864), in Saint-Paul-de-Chester (from April 18, 1864 to November 15 1873) and Nicolet (from July 3, 1876 to December 20, 1879). Taken as a whole, the data collected in these official documents with administrative and legal content can constitute a documentary source of the most revealing on the mode and the living conditions of the population during this period (trades and professions mentioned in the contracts, inventories of goods , wills), on the social classes (mention of titles corresponding to the social rank of the concerned parties such bourgeois, squire, etc), on the customs and customs accepted by the society and its institutions (by declarations, arbitration, injunctions, orders, etc.), on relations with the Native people (commercial agreements, conflicts), and, to a lesser extent, on the period medicine and its representatives. Finally, the terminology used in these notarial contracts could be advantageously recovered in the framework of studies on the evolution of the administrative and legal language, or even on the evolution of the French language.
