Biography

Lilian Birt was born in Surrey, England.

Lilian was born in 1861 to Charles Henry Birt and Louisa MacPherson. Her birth was registered in the last quarter of 1861 at Epsom, Surrey, England.

Lilian never married. She appears to have completely immersed herself in the endeavors started by her mother and her aunt, Annie MacPherson. She lived and worked at the Liverpool Sheltering Home. Several groups of children left Liverpool bound for Canada under her chaperonage. As her mother's health waned, Lilian shouldered more of the responsibility of running the home. On the death of her mother, Mrs. Louisa Birt, in 1915 Miss Lilian Birt took over as manager of the Liverpool Sheltering Home for Destitute Children. Ten years later, in 1925, the home was sold to the Barnardo foundation.
