Color bearer for the 154th N.Y.V.I. - same position formerly held by his younger brother, Lewis Bishop who was killed at Gettysburg. According to Mark H. Dunkelman in his book "Brothers, Heroes, Martyrs". George was killed at the battle of Dug Gap or Rocky Face Ridge in northern Georgia as he planted the colors atop the ridge. He was shot through the head and died instantly. George had been home to visit his wife and children and grieving sister-in-law, Lucy, in January and early February 1864.
