Birth and Parents

Heber Reginald Bishop, the fourth son and eighth of nine children of Nathaniel Holmes Bishop and Mary Smith Farrar was born on 2 March 1840 at Medford, Massachusetts, and christened on 3 May 1840 at Medford.[2]

In 1850, Heber was 10 years of age and living at Medford with his mother, Mary (44 years of age) and siblings Mary (20 years), Eliza (17 years), Nathaniel (13 years), Harriet (11 years) and Josephine (9 years), and three other person Hubbard Chamberlain (20 years, New Hampshire), Catherine Beady (23 years, Ireland) and John Mahoney (30 years, Ireland). It is not known by this census if Mary Bishop was widowed.[3]

Entrepreneur

When he was 19, Heber moved to Cuba and began work in the sugar business. Within a few years he started Bishop & Company, a sugar refinery. He sold Bishop & Company in 1873 and returned to the United States, where he invested in a number of banking firms, iron and steel companies, railroads, and mining companies. He also made substantive contributions to the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.[4]

Marriage and Children

Heber married Mary Cunningham, the second daughter of James and Elizabeth (Griffiths) Cunningham of Irvington, New York on 20 October 1862 at Irvington, Westchester, New York. They had twelve children, eight of whom lived to adulthood born at Irvington-on-Hudson, New York (based on passport applications for Heber Bishop:

Census Records for 1870, 1880 and 1900

In 1870, Heber (30 years, occupation Merchant) and Mary (27 years), their children Mary (6 years), Elizabeth (5 years), Harriet (4 years), Heber (2 years) and James (3 months) and three domestic servants were residing at Greenburgh, Westchester, New York.[10]

In 1880, Heber (40 years, retired sugar merchant) and wife Mary (38 years) were living at Irvington, Westchester, New York with their children Frances (16 years), Hattie (14 years), Ardie (11 years), James (10 years), Reggie (8 years), Mary (6 years), Harry (3 years), Ogden (1 year) and ten household servants.[11]

In 1900, Heber (60 years, b. Mar 1840) and wife Mary (58 years, b. Jan 1842) had been married for 58 years with eight children who had grown to adulthood. They were living at Manhattan, New York during this census with children Mary (35 years), Francis C. (27 years, occupation Banker), Ogden M. (21 years, student) and thirteen servants. [12]

Death and Burial

Heber Reginald Bishop died on 10 December 1902 in his 62nd year at his Manhattan residence.[13] He is entombed in Bishop family mausoleum in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery at Sleepy Hollow, Westchester, New York.[14] His will dated 5 April 1899 was entered into probate on 20 December 1902 at New York, New York.[15]
