Biography

Sarah was born in 1794 to George Dolbeare Bishop and Jane Burbidge.

She first married 10 Jan 1812, Elijah Daniel Miner, as his second wife. He died 15 Feb 1831 in Horton, Kings Co.

She married secondly, 26 Feb 1833 in Pictou, William Phare.

In 1881, Sarah Phare, widow, 86 was residing with Malcolm and Elizabeth McGregor and their family in Pictou.[1]

She died 26 Nov 1889 at Pictou, Pictou Co., Nova Scotia. The 6 Dec 1889 edition of the Saint John Globe reported: "The death of Sarah Phare which occurred at Pictou, N.S. on 20th ult, at age of 95 years, was the removal of one of the most esteemed women of that town. Her maiden name was Sarah Bishop and her mother, who also obtained an age upwards of 90 years, was a niece of Colonel Burbridge who held command with Lord Cornwallis at the founding at the city of Halifax in 1749. Mrs. Phare, by her first husband, the late E.D. Miner, left numerous descendants, including Jacob G. Miner, New York, inventor of the Miner globe lamp; George W. Miner, San Francisco; Mrs. John Costley, Halifax, N.S.; Rev. D.M. Gordon, a grandson; Rev. D.M. Stearns, Scranton, Pa.; the wife of Rev. James A. Fraser, M.P.P,; Miss Charlotte Wilson, missionary to India, who died there a year ago. She was interested to tell how people had laughed at her husband's early predictions that there would be steamboats on Pictou Harbour because of the coal mines, though he did not live to see them there. It was curious that the family of eight which E.D. Miner left more than half a century ago, all were living until last month, when Mrs. Andrew Fisher, was first to die, at the age of 76. Mrs. Phare was the second of the old family circle to go. - 'Halifax Herald' "[2]
