Biography

Timothy Bishop was born 22 Jul 1740 in New London, Connecticut. He was the son of John Bishop and Rebecca Whipple.

He was one of the original grantees of the township of Horton in 1761. As an unmarried male, he received 1/2 share (250 acres).[1]

According to Tangled Roots, "He lived in Greenwich on the site of the house built by his son, Ebenezer in 1832. Timothy’s property went from his son, Ebenezer, to his grandson Edward Russell, great-grandson, William Humphrey, and great-great-grandson, Hazen Russell, who sold it to Timothy’s great- granddaughter, Nellie Olivia (Roy) Forsyth, and her husband, Howard Nobel Forsyth, who sold it to their daughter (Timothy’s great-great-granddaughter), Edythe Blanche (Forsyth) Quinn, who in turn sold the house to Reginald Forsyth, and it is now owned by William Hettema (1990), and a large part of the original grant is owned by his 7th generation descendant, Avard Newcombe Bishop." In 1990. the farm was being operated by Avard and his sons Andrew Avard Bishop and Stirling Alexander Bishop.

Timothy married twice. He married first on 1 Apr 1762, Mercy Harding. She was born 30 Jan 1742, the daughter of Abraham and Mercy (Vibber) Harding. She died 22 Aug 1783.

In 1770, Timothy is listed in the census of Horton Township with a family consisting of 1 man [himself], 1 boy [Silas], 1 woman [Mercy, his first wife] and 3 girls [Abigail, Rebecca, Eunice], all Protestant, all Americans [sic].

On 18 Dec 1783 Timothy married Mercy (Gore) Newcombe. She was born 10 Feb 1743 at Preston, CT, the daughter of Moses and Desire Gore and died 26 Jul 1832 at Greenwich, Horton, N.S. ae 89 years. Mercy was married first in 1769 to Simon Newcombe who came to Nova Scotia in 1760 with his father and died 1776 in Amherst, Nova Scotia).

Timothy was baptised as an adult, 2 Dec 1798.

Timothy Bishop, yeoman of Horton, wrote his Last Will and Testament 1 Mar 1816 leaving bequests to his wife, Mercy, sons Timothy, Ezra, and Silas, and daughters Mary, Mercy, Amy, Eunice, Rebecca, Abigail, Ann and Olivia. The will was probated 5 Feb 1827.

Timothy died 10 Jan 1827 at Greenwich, Horton Township, in his 86th year, and is buried at the Old Cemetery in Wolfville.
