Biography

Caleb Bishop was born on 24 Jan 1659 (or 1660?), in Guilford in the Connecticut Colony. He was the son of Stephen Bishop and [[Wilkinson-2706|Tabitha Wilkinson] (or Wikinson).[1]

Caleb was married to Lydia (or Lidiah) Everts of Guilford on 18 Aug 1692, by Andrew Leete in Guilford.[2] They registered the birth of one child in Guilford:

  • Lydia Bishop (b. 23 Jul 1694)[3][4]

Caleb Bishop died in Guilford at about the age of 72, on May 19th, probably in 1732.[5]

Research Notes

Note on Date of Birth: The year of Caleb Bishop's birth is open to dispute. The Barbour Collection shows the date as 1659, with no indication that it was an Old Style date (which would make it 1660, New Style). Calculating from his date of death (which is also approximated, due to a lacuna in the source (which gives it as 173--, reconstructed as 173[2]) and approximated age at death ("AE about 72 y."), he might have been born in either 1659 or 1660.

Note on Date of Marriage: The Guilford Vital Records (Barbour Collection, cited above) give the date as 18 Aug 1692. Torrey provides two possible dates: either 18 Aug or 19 Aug 1692, both for a marriage in Guilford. His sources for the entry are: Fairfield Fam. 1:194; Benton-Bishop 49; Putnam's Mag. 3:245; TAG 13:96; Reg. 61:26; Hall-Baldwin 67.[6]

Caleb is person 39 in DJB. The family settled early in Madison.[7]

Bishop-7598 and Bishop-579 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same name, the same birth, marriage and death information (see research notes on Bishop-579), and the same spouse (merge also requested for duplicate profiles for spouse).
