Jane Chislett forced the family to move to Cavendish and back to St. John's during the war so that her sons would not be conscripted. 1

«/i»[There are some figures scribbled on the page calculating Jane's age at her death in 1955, presumably added by Nan or Muriel. Also the year 1882 is written there, the year of birth of their first child, Aunt Sue. Sue was conceived out of wedlock, not uncommon in outports in those days, since there were no preachers in residence in most of them. But it seems someone was doing the math and realised she was born only one month after her parents were married!«i».

Before discovering these notations I had no idea of the names of Jane's parents.
I am not aware at this time of the significance of the notation concerning the shipwreck. I assume Jacob was somehow involved. 1

I was always under the impression, presumably based upon what Mom told me, that Jacob was from Shoal Bay, now Cavendish, and Jane was from Island Cove, later Islington, and now part of Islington-Heart's Delight. But the Vital Statistics record for their marriage places him in Heart's Delight and she in Island Cove. In those days Heart's Delight was quite distinct and was a village on the other side of Island Cove (Islington) from Shoal Bay (Cavendish), so there should have been no confusing the two. At this stage I don't know how to sort this out but thought I had better record this doubtful information in hopes of sorting it out later. 1

Further to the above, while Jacob Bishop appears on the Voters List of 1889 as being a resident of Heart's Delight, when this same Voters List was edited and added to the book The History of Isnington and Heart's Delight (which carefully avoids any reference whatsoever to the nearby village of Cavendish, formerly Shoal Bay or Harbour) Jacob's name does not appear on their list and neither does his brother Corbett. This seems to imply that someone edited him out as a non resident of either Islington or Heart's Delight. The mysery remains unsolved.
