Biography

Elizabeth Bishop was a daughter of Walter Bishop of Buckland Newton.

She married Thomas Kingsbury (alias Rodner) some time around 1615. The Kingsbury family were already well established in Cheselbourne by then.

They had several children, and he pre-deceased her. In 1658 Elizabeth wrote her will as follows:

"I Elizabeth Kingsbury alias Elizabeth Rodner of Cheseldon (sic) in the county of Dorset, widdow being by the good hands of God visited with a sickness do which I deeme my last and best to bring & mee to him and being as hereby warned soe fitted and prepared as with a resolution for with reason perfect memory and discretion to make and leave this behind mee as my last deliberate will and testament bequeathing

Imprimis my spirit into the hands of him that gave it as into the hands of my faythful creator and my body to the earth from whence it came to be (??) in the churchyard of Cheseldon aforesaid.

Item I give of current English money to Thomas my sonne one shilling & sixpence.

Item to my sonn John tenn shillings and to his sonne John tenne shillings.

Item to my daughter Mary the wife of Thomas Vivian or Hoggard one shilling and six pence.

Item to my sonne Peter tenn pounds,

Item to my sonne Adam one pounde and to his sonne John tenne shillings.

All which said funnes to bee paid twelve months after my decease.

Item to my sonne Richard tenne pounds to be allowed him out of the goodes which are to be divided otherwise equally betwixt him and his brother Henry, both which said Henry and Richard I constitute and appointe my joynte executors of this my will for affirme (?) whereof I have hereunto sett my hand Elizabeth Kingsbury, her marke in the presence of (John) Pierce, Rector there, Johane the wife of John Kingsbury heir"

(Signed Elizabeth Kingsbury, her mark, Oct. 27, 1658).


"This will was proved at London the eight and twentieth day of March in the yeare of our god one thousand six hundred fiftie and nyne before the judges for probat of wills and granntings administations lawfully authorised by the oath of Henry Kingsbury alias Rodner and Richard Kingsbury alias Rodner joynt executors of the said deceased in the same will named to whom was committed administration of all and singular the goods chattells and debts of the said deceased according to the tenor (?) effect and same intent and meaninge of the said will, they beinge first sworne by virtue of a commision will and faithfully to administer the same."
