Biography

Isaac Bissell was born September 22, 1682 in Windsor[1], and was principal heir to his father’s estate, under guardianship of his mother, in 1689. He married Elizabeth Osborne (1684-1761), daughter of John Osborn and Abigail Eggleston on May 7, 1706 in Windsor. Isaac was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Connecticut Colonial Militia in October, 1722. In 1723/4, the family moved to Litchfield, CT, where they had 10 children. In 1730, Isaac bought a 1/64 share of the township of Litchfield. He is said to have served as one of the organizers of the First Episcopal Church of Litchfield Nov. 5, 1743. (Note that the ‘Protestant Episcopal Church’ was not officially founded as the successor to the Anglican Church in America until 1789, so this was presumably a branch of the Established Church of England, perhaps implying a philosophical departure from Puritanism on Isaac’s part). He died Nov. 6, 1744, and Elizabeth died June 15, 1761, both in Litchfield.
