Biography

Uncertain parentage: History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield Compiled and Edited, by Donald Lines Jacobus (Daughters of the American Revolution, Fairfield, Connecticut, 1930) page 533 lists her marriage to Justus (undated) and lists her as Phebe ___________ indicating that he did not find her maiden name. The Will of Benjamin Bissell does not list Phebe, only children Joseph (administrator), Benjamin, Sarah, Betty (Betsy) and Zerviah.

Phebe Bissell married Justus Seeley[1] before 1754.

Phoebe was born about 1725. She passed away about 1790.[citation needed] [2]

Research Notes

  • Walworth, Reuben Hyde, Hyde Genealogy, or, The Descendants, in the Female as Well as in the Male Lines, From William Hyde of Norwich, Albany, 1864. Ancestry.com index notes from this publication erroneously list Phebe as the daughter of Benjamin Bissell and Mary Wattles. https://archive.org/details/hydegenealogyord001walw The book only discusses Sarah Bissell as the wife of her husband Hyde and nowhere mentions a Phebe Bissell.
  • The Will of Benjamin Bissell does not list Phebe, only children Joseph (administrator), Benjamin, Sarah, Betty (Betsy) and Zerviah.
  • Marked Benjamin Bissell as "uncertain" as there is no documentation and this lineage goes to President Millard Fillmore. It should remain uncertain until such time as documentation proves or disproves the parentage.

Bissell-20 and Bissell-834 appear to represent the same person because: Appear to be the same person as wife of Justus Seeley with slight discrepancies in birth/death dates. I'm aware actual documentation on her is very thin. I do not believe there is a primary or reliable secondary source showing she is the daughter of Benjamin Bissell although this is seen in many genealogies. That could be noted following a merge.
