Lawson Oliver Bittaker Sr. died on Sunday, February 12, 1978 when his Army OV-1C Mohawk aircraft crashed in the woods on the opposite side of Highway 41 across from runway at Dobbins AFB, Marietta, Georgia. Lawson served as Technical Observer on the aircraft which was piloted by Chief Warrant Officer Brannan. Cause of the crash was later determined by investigating officials to be associated with engine maintenance preformed 27 hours earlier by Cumberland Army Depot. During the maintenance of the engine, glass pellets used in the shot peening process to clean the inside of the engine casing were not removed. Mr Brannan had over 20,000 hours of flying experience and was successful in navigating the vehicle to the wooded area and away from a crowded shopping area prior to crashing.
