Research Notes

It has been proposed that Hans (John) Bixler and John Hans Bixler be merged as they are the same person. Ulrich Bichsel has been proven to be the father and Anna Baiser the mother. The reservations I have about merge has to do with the ancestry of Ulrich. There are two notable researchers on this line and they disagree to Ulrich's ancestry. Richard Warren Davis of Provo, Utah, spent a lot of time in Germany and Switzerland researching Mennonite origins of American families. In 1995, he published Emigrants, Refugees, and Prisoners, Vol. I. The other being Ernst Bichsel who lives in Switzerland and researched his ancestry. As it is unlikely that I would be able to confirm the correct ancestry of Urich I believe selecting one over the other could/would be misleading.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line. Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line: It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I have reservations about merging these two John Bixlers. Not because they are different people but due to the ancestry. It seems that everyone agrees that Ulrich Bichsel is John's father. At this junction is where I see the problem. There are two notable researchers on this line and they disagree to the ancestry. Richard Warren Davis of Provo, Utah, spent a lot of time in Germany and Switzerland researching Mennonite origins of American families. In 1995, he published Emigrants, Refugees, and Prisoners, Vol. I. and Ernst Bichsel of Switzerland who researched his genealogy. In my feeble little mind the only way I see to present the information to prevent (I hate this term) misinformation is as follows.

Disconnect Ulrich from his parents, merge the town Johns, connect Ulrich as father. On Ulricks profile page add "Research Notes" and describe the two possible paths.

Received your response by email;

"I have a similar situation with another set of profiles. You would need to annotate the other profiles also." I agree that the other two profile would also need to be annotated. If my proposal is acceptable to you then the profile manager of Ulrich will need to be contacted for her cooperation.

Hi Gina

You have requested a merge of Bixler-40 and Bixler-203. Before you merge them please consider the two trails that led to his father Ulrich Bichsel. One ancestry by Agnes Bixler Kurts, John Bixler, Pioneer, Immigrant, Farmer, found on Family Search. The other by Ernst Bichsel at (https://www.ebi-ahnen.ch/Bixler.htm), this site is in German and had to use Google Translate, What ever you deside is fine with me.

Hi, Kurt.

Thank you for pointing out both those sources. As far as I can tell, they do not appear to be inconsistent with each other, but please say if I'm overlooking something.

Ernst Bichsel gives that Hans / John was born 1700 in Eggiwil and died 1765 in Manheim, York. He lists two wives (Katharina Wägeli and Magdalena Krähenbühl) and children Maria Magdalena, Jacob, John Casper, Samuel B., Elizabeth (m. John Miller) and Esther (m. Joseph Brillhart).

The history by Agnes Bixler Kurts notes (p.197) the marriage of John Bixler to Magdalena Kroehbiel, but does not elaborate on their family. She notes also (pp.160-161) that John Bixler who died near Hanover, York, in 1765 is sometimes reported to be the son of Peter Bixler, but that this is disputed. She doesn't comment on whether these two Johns are the same man. Her research is focused on her ancestor, Peter (the Immigrant), and I don't think she makes any connection between him and either John or Ulrich.

The will you've transcribed identifies children Samuel, Jacob, John, Elizabeth and Madalena (and a step-daughter Mary and son-in-law John Miller). Absent from the will are : the daughter Esther (identified by Ernst Bischel as being still alive when John's will was made), and the children Christian and Catherina (who appear on the profile for Hans Bixler-203).

So it looks like - with three conflicting accounts - there's some question about who John's children were, and that needs to be resolved. It's possible that Esther, Christian and Catherina have been incorrectly identified, but John's will does make non-specific reference to the "brethren and sisteren" of Samuel, which leaves room for others who are not mentioned by name.

The evidence which identifies John as the husband of Magdalena Krohbiel, and son of Ulrich, seems circumstantial, and so I'd be inclined to mark them as "uncertain" - but there doesn't seem to be anything at this stage to contradict it.

All of which is to say that I don't see a problem with the merge, but there are evidently inconsistencies which should be noted. If there are reasons why it shouldn't go ahead then it would be good to have a record on the profile of what the objections are. At the moment, with the exact same birth and death details, the same wife's name, and (mostly) the same children's names, it's a match which is going to keep coming up.

My interest is actually with the daughters of John's son, Samuel - I'm hoping to find matrilineal descendants who might be willing to participate in mt-DNA testing - so I'm happy to have a clear line of descent from them and to leave the deeper Bixler ancestry to others :)

Hi Gina

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. My concerns about this merge is that we have two researchers (Agnes Bixler Kurtz and Ernst Bichsel) they both agree that Ulrich Bichsel was the father of John Bixler (Hans Bichsel). They do not however agree on the ancestors of Ulrich. As it is unlikely that I would be able to confirm the correct ancestry of Urich I believe selecting one over the other could/would add to the confusion of Ulrich's ancestors. Like you my interests are more in the descendants of John than his ancestors. I agree with you. Lets reject the merge and build the descendant tree with the sources we know are accurate.

I understand now why you’re uncomfortable with this, and I do take your point about the discrepancies in the reports of earlier ancestors. However, the Wikitree policy is that there should be only one profile for a person, and that any discrepancies or uncertainties should be noted and discussed on the profile.

So, unless there is any reason to think that there were two different men named Hans who have been conflated here, I’d suggest it would be better to go ahead with the merge, but to note that there is disagreement over the earlier ancestry. This should be recorded on the profile for Ulrich also, and the “alternative” parents for him should be clearly identified.

What do you think?

Those are very good points you have made. Go ahead with the merge.

Bixler-389 and Bixler-203 appear to represent the same person because: Birth data match except for a discrepancy of exactly one year; same death data; same wives.
posted on Bixler-203 (merged) by Ellen Smith
Baiser-2 and Bixler-389 appear to represent the same person because: Ulrich Bischel only had one son named Hans, who when by John in the US. In addition to that, their birthdays are listed as the same day on two consecutive years. Baiser [i.e. Baiser-2] is the Americanization of Hans's mother's maiden name, Anna Bächer.
