Biography

Samuel Black; b. 1765 at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine;

Mrs. Rebecca Annes of Annes Island and Mr. Samuel Black of Sedgwick were pub. April 1 1790 by Joshua Snow, Town Clerk, forbidden by Susanna Lee Crow;

m. Rebecca Annis, daughter of Rolfe Annis and Sarah Rawlins, 19 May 1790[1] at Deer Isle, Hancock, Maine;

He died 21 Feb 1862[2] Brooksville, Hancock, Maine.

The names of Samuel's parents seems to have been a mystery for some time. Numerous queries have appeared in various genealogical publications. Thanks to Almon Gray for providing what may be the only evidence in existence. From Stephen Decatur Gray's autobiography, written around 1905, the following: "My mother was Charlotte Black, daughter of Samuel and Rebecca Black. Her grandfather was John Black, who also served as a soldier during the war of the revolution."

Rebecca Annis was born at Londonderry, Rockingham, New Hampshire. She was baptized on 5 Apr 1767 at Andover, Essex, Massachusetts. She died after 1860 at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine.

  • ii. Rebecca Black; b. 15 May 1794 at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine; b. 15 May 1794 at Brooklin, Hancock, Maine; m. Benjamin York, son of Benjamin York and Mary Cummings, 4 Nov 1813 at Deer Isle, Hancock, Maine; d. 5 Dec 1867 at Rockport, Knox, Maine, at age 73.
