Biography

Charles Black, son of James Black and Rachel Adams, was born on 10 Aug 1777 in Beaufort District, SC and died on 18 Aug 1830 near Tallahassee in the Territory of Florida at age 53.

Charles likely married first Eliza C. [maiden name unknown] who died shortly before 15 May 1809 at Beaufort, SC "in the 33d year of her age." They likely had three children.

Charles married (likely his second) Rebecca DuPont, daughter of first cousins Josiah DuPont and Anne Goodbee DuPont of Beaufort District, SC & East Florida. Rebecca was born about 1789 (possibly Beaufort District, SC or possibly near St. Augustine, FL) and died after 10 Oct 1823.

Notes

Birth: From "St. Helena's Parish Register" (SCHM, 21: 23): "Black, Charles, Do. Do. [Sn. James & Rachel, Beaufort]. Born Augt. 10, 1777. Bapt. by Graham." [1].

Birth & marriage: Transcript of Black family information as presented in Arkansas DAR Record Books (line breaks removed): [2] "Bible owned by Edward J. Black of Atlanta, Ga. James Black & Rachel Adams, married Nov. 6, 1762. James Black, born March 14,1740; died Aug. 8, 1780. Rachel Adams, born Sept. 8, 1743; died Sept. [sic: Aug] 20, 1787. Elizabeth Black, born Aug. 25, 1766; m. John Laycroft. Ann Black, born Dec. 1768; m. James Bowman & John Blythwood. James Black, born Aug. 30, 1770; m. Elizabeth Saltres. Sarah Black, born Mar. 29, 1772, m. William Baynard. William Black, born April 21, 1774; m. Sarah Hanson Reid. Charles Black, born Aug. 10, 1777; m. Rebecca Dupont. Mary Black, born July 6, 1779; m. Joseph Luther Grayson."

  • COMMENT (by Black-12270): The notation that the bible was "owned by Edward J. Black of Atlanta, Ga." is quite puzzling. I know of only four men in the Black family named Edward J. Black and none are known to have resided in Atlanta, Ga. All four were closely related to my great-grandfather, Paul DeLacy Black, and none are known to have had a bible that contained these entries.

Birth & marriage: From unpublished typescript citing "Copy of record compiled by Samuel Chapman Black of Charleston, S.C., May 4, 1856, commencing with his Great Grand Parents" (line breaks removed; periods added at some breaks): "James Black, Sr. born March 14, 1740, died Aug. 8, 1780. Rachel Adams, born in Philadelphia, Sept. 8, 1743, died Aug. 20, 1787 (Cousin of President Adams) Married Nov. 13, 1762. - Children - Eliza, born Aug. 25, 1766, Married Leacraft 1st and Longworth 2nd. Ann, [born] Dec. 16, 1768, [married] Bythewood & Bowman. James, [born] Aug. 13, 1770, [married] Eliza C. Salters. Sarah, [born] Mar. 29, 1772, [married] Baynard. William, [born] Apl. 21, 1774, [married] Sarah Hanson Reid. Charles, [born] Aug. 10, 1777, Married (not secured). Mary, [born] July 6, 1779, [married] Grayson. [3].

Death: From The Southern Patriot, issue of 7 Sep 1830, Charleston, SC: "Died, near Tallahasee, Florida, on the 18th Aug., Charles Black, Esq. aged 52." [4]

G7, pp. 88-91. [8]

  • COMMENT (by Black-12270): Cat Island was purchased by Charles's father James in 1777 for 10 shillings plus payment of one ear of Indian Corn at end of one year. Great-grandson Samuel Chapman Black wrote in 1856 that James gave Cat Island "to his sons Charles and William, who sold it to Bodon from whom it decended to his son, who devised it to his widow whom Read Richard Fuller afterward married and they became owners of Cat Island."] [9] [10]

1805 - deed of trust: [abstract] William Black planter of St Lukes Parish, Beaufort District, & Sarah Hanson Black his wife & Charles Black planter of the same place, for $2 & love & affection "which he hath & beareth towards his said wife Sarah Hanson & the better to enable her to support & maintain her self"; said William assigns to said Charles "all those seventeen negroe slaves to wit Bella, and her three children Sally, Mary, Harry, Leath, George, Mary Ann, Claudius, Ben, Cuffy, Sandy, Will, Nelly, Tenah, Ben, Jeptha and Martha together with their future issue and increase of the females, also a horse called Nisbet, a gig & harness & the following household furniture namely a set of mahogany tables, a mahogany secretary a mahogany commode, a mahogany bedstead, a pianna forte, a pair of large lookinglasses a small one three feather beds three mattresses one dozen Windsor chairs a set of China a pair urns plated and tract of land containing sixteen acres in the state aforesaid"; signed 6 Apr 1805 in presence of Elizabeth Leacraft & John L. Agnew; proved 11 Jun 1805 by Elizabeth Leacraft; recorded 25 Jun 1805, SC Marriage Settlements, vol. 5, pp. 50-53. [11]

  • COMMENT (by Black-12270): No doubt, the witness Elizabeth Leacraft was William's sister Elizabeth widow of John Leacraft.

1812 - deed of trust: [abstract] Charles Black of Barnwell District, SC, to Robert Raymond Reid of city of Augusta, GA for "esteem friendship and affection which he hath and bears Mrs. Sarah Hanson Black" & $5; several "Negro Slaves to wit: Titus, Betty, Agnes, Lettice Flora, and Fanny" for sole use of Mrs. Sarah Hanson Black free from any control of her said husband William & in no wise liable for satisfaction of any contracts or debts of her said husband William; signed 2 Oct 1812 in presence of Ann Bythewood, Thos O'Hara; recorded 20 Oct 1812, Barnwell Co. (SC) Deeds, vol. G, pp. 7-8. [12]

  • COMMENT (by Black-12270): No doubt, witness Ann Bythewood was Charles's sister Ann (Black) Bythewood, wife of Capt. John Bythewood. No doubt, trustee Robert Raymond Reid was brother of Mrs. Sarah Hanson Black.

1823 - last known evidence of Rebecca (DuPont) Black: From Spanish Land Grants in Florida, Vol. 1 (WPA typescript, 1940) citing claim by heirs of Josiah Dupont (UNC. D 52; G & S VI 76, 77; DG V 390): "Ann Buyck, of South Carolina, Cornelius Dupont, Josiah Dupont, Charles Black, Rebecca Black, and Josiah Bryon, the only heirs of Josiah Dupont, deceased claim 500 acres on the Matanzas River ... [of] a grant of Governor Quesada, 10/18/1794, and was held by Josiah Dupont from 1794 to 1802, when the Indians drove him out"; dated 10/10/1823. [13]

1842 - probate admin: [abstract] Charles C. Dupont of Leon Co., Territory of Florida, gives bond (with Charles H. Dupont & Joseph Seabrook as sureties) in penalty amount of $40,000 for admin of goods and chattels of Charles Black dec'd; admin granted & recorded 10 Jan 1842, Leon Co. Letters Testamentary of Admin. and Guardianship, Vol. A, no. 5. [14]

  • COMMENT (by Black-12270): No doubt, Charles C. Dupont was Charles's son-in-law, husband of Rebecca (Black) Dupont. Given that probate of Charles's estate was delayed for twelve years following his death, then perhaps Charles's wife Rebecca survived him until about 1842.
