Biography

James W Black was born on 1 Jun 1800, died about 25 Jan 1827 at age 26, and was buried in First Baptist Church Graveyard, Charleston, SC. Thought have died single, as no evidence has been found of any marriage.

  • COMMENT (by Black-12270): Some family trees show James as being of Abbeville District, SC and having married Susan E. Killingsworth. This likely stems from an old Family Group Record submitted to the LDS Church in which James A. Black of Abbeville District is shown as a descendant of James and Rachel (Adams) Black of Beaufort District, SC. I haven't found any reliable evidence to suggest that there was any relationship between the James A Black family of Abbeville District and the James Black family of Beaufort District.

Notes

Birth: From unpublished typescript citing "Copy of record compiled by Samuel Chapman Black of Charleston, S.C., May 4, 1856, commencing with his Great Grand Parents" (line breaks removed; periods added at some breaks): "James Black, Jr., and Eliza C. Salters, Married March 6, 1794. [their children] Sarah, born Jan. 3, 1795. Eliza Ann, born July 11, 1796. Francis Charles, born March 3, 1798. James W. born June 1, 1800." [1].

Funeral: From the Charleston Mercury issue of 25 Jan 1827: "The Friends and Acquaintances of Mr. James W Black, Wm H Evans, and H W Lubbock, are requested to attend the funeral of the former, from the residence of the latter, No. 1 South Bay, This Afternoon, at 3 o'clock, without further invitation." [2]

  • COMMENT (by Black-12270): "Wm H Evans" was undoubtedly brother-in-law William Henry Evans, husband of Eliza Ann (Black) Evans; "H W Lubbock" was likely an in-law, as the Saltus family and Lubbock family are known to be connected by marriage.

Death/Burial : Information cited as originating in the First Baptist Church of Charleston's 2nd Sexton's Book: James W Black, died 25 Jan 1827, age 26 yrs [3]

  • COMMENT (by Black-12270): Based on the Charleston Mercury funeral notice published 25 Jan 1827, the above Sexton's entry could be date of burial rather than date of death.
