Biography

Rev. William Black, a Wesleyan Methodist minister and the founder of the Methodist congregation in colonial Nova Scotia was born 22 Sept 1760 in Huddersfield, England, the second of five children of William Black and Elizabeth Stocks.[1] and was baptized on 28 Oct 1760 at teh Elland, Southgate Presbyterian Chapel[2]

William married first on 17 Feb. 1784 Mary Gay in Cumberland County, N.S., and they had five children. William married secondly 20 July 1828 Martha (Parker) Calkin, a widow, in Liverpool, N.S., and they had no issue.[3][4][5] Three of his children by his first wife, Martin Gay, William Anderson, and Samuel, became leading Halifax merchants; a daughter, Mary, also by his first wife, married the merchant and politician John Alexander Barry. Rev. Black, or Bishop Black as he was called, died 8 Sept. 1834 in Halifax and is buried at Point de Bute Methodist Cemetery in Point de Bute, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, Canada. According to the Public Archives of Canada, William, his wife and 5 children left the Port of Hull to live in Nova Scotia after purchasing land.[7] Sarah, William's sister, was born on or about 18 Sep 1767. (there is some confusion about Sarah's birth)[8]

  • His obituary appeared in the New Brunswick Courier on 13 Sep 1834.[11]
