Biography

William B Black was born about 1878 in Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.[1][2][3][4] His grandparents were David Black and Margaret Little as stated in the 1881 census,[1] although they are listed as his "parents" in the 1891 census and on his second marriage certificate.[2][4] On his first marriage certificate, he indicates that his mother was Isabella Black and no father is named.[3]

In the 1881 Scotland census, William B Black (3) was living with his grandparents David Black (52) and Margaret Black (52) and their children Isabella Black (28), Helen Black (24), Georgina L Black (14), James L Black (11) and David Black (8). It is not clear from the census record who his parents were, but he is clearly labelled as grandson, and his place of birth is different from their children.[1] (Note that the Ancestry transcription lists Isabella's age as 38, but the actual transcript indicates 28.)

In the 1891 Scotland census, William Black (13) was living in Dryfesdale with David Black (62) and Margaret L Black (62) and their children Isabella Black (39), Agnes L Black (32), Georgina L Black (24) and David Black (18). He is listed as their "son" although from 1881 census it is clear he was grandson. He is also listed as a mole catcher.[2]

William Black (22, mole catcher) married Sarah Swan (18, spinster) on 1 Jun 1900 at Kersemuir, Johnstone parish, Dumfriesshire. He lists his mother as Isabella Black, dressmaker, deceased.[3]

In the 1901 Scotland census, William Black (23, born Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire) was living in Dryfesdale. He was married to Sarah Black (19). He was a mole catcher.[5]

William Black married Janet Little on 10 Feb 1910 in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. The marriage certificate indicates that he was 32, widower, son of David Black (deceased) and Margaret Little (deceased).[4][6]

Georgina Black was born in 1912 in Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire. Her birth certificate indicates that her parents were William Black (mole catcher) and Janet Little, who married on 10 Feb 1910.[6]
