Alfred was one of the youngest children of Ephraim Black and Tabitha ("Docia") Holmesley. He was born around 1816 in the part of Lincoln County, NC that would become Gaston County.
In 1850 he was living with his widowed mother Docia and his wife Elizabeth and a possible brother Lawrence. Next door is his brother Lorenzo's family.[1] It is not clear where his sons Ephraim and William Pinkney are living - they should have been around 8-12 years old at the time of the census.
In 1860 he and his wife Elizabeth (Lizzy) are still living next door to Lorenzo, and with them are Ephraim, 22, and Pinkney, 20.[2] Docia had died in 1854.
His second marriage was late in life to Mahala Self in 1870.[3]
He died in 1892 and is buried at Jake Avery Farm in Lincoln County along with his parents.[4]
