Biography

Margaret (Mary F) Black was born in 1776 in Loudoun Co., Virginia. She was the daughter of Daniel Black and C. LNU. Her birth date comes from Census Records and her death date comes from her Death Record. Strangely, her age is listed as 97 on her Death Record, which is inconsistent with the Census Records and her recent memorial. Her place of birth comes from Tax Records which showed her father being in Loudoun County during that time frame. Her parents are listed in her Death Record as D & C Black. Mary F comes from a transcription of her Death Record. The original handwriting in the Death Record could also be interpreted as Marg F and as Marg't. "Mary F" will be used, for now, to avoid confusion with Margaret Black, the wife of Roger Poling. That Margaret is believed to be either an older sister or an aunt to the "Margaret/Mary F" of this profile.

Margaret, of this profile, married Samuel Martin Poling Senior on Easter Sunday of 1793. This info, per the Tatterson Book, comes from an 1850 Census Book owned at the time by Dr. Glen Poling.

On 22 April 1805, Phineas Wells and wife Plony sold to Abraham Wells, for $1.00, 101 acres on the waters of Glady Creek, in Randolph County, Virginia. Then, on 5 April 1817 Abraham and his wife Martha sold that land, now 105 acres, to Martin Poling. In 1819, Martin passed away and Margaret's husband Samuel inherited "50 acres where he was now residing" according to the Will of his father Martin Poling. Samuel's sister Elizabeth also inherited 50 acres.

Margaret's husband Samuel passed away in 1840 and she was appointed Executrix on 14 August 1840. On 19 March 1846, Margaret sold to William and Samuel Elliot the land her husband owned on Glady Creek which included part of the land conveyed by Phineas Wells to Abraham Wells in 1805. This land was the 50 acres her husband had inherited from his father, and 25 acres of his sister, Elizabeth's, 50-acre inheritance.

On 24 April 1857 Margaret Poling sold to John B. Poling 86 acres on the waters of Bill's Creek, land that was conveyed by Wm. F. Wilson to Martin Poling in 1838. This Martin Poling was her son.

On 31 April 1857 Martin Poling and wife Sarah sold to Margaret Poling, for $1.00, 86.25 acres on waters of Bills Creek. There must have been a prearrangement of these last two sales because Margaret clearly sold the property before she owned it.

Margaret is found living in the household of her son, John B. Poling, in the 1850 and 1860 Census Records.

Margaret passed away in 1864. Note that the parents listed in her Bio on her memorial are not correct, as shown in the Research Notes.

Research Notes

This Margaret was not the daughter of Samuel Black and Jane (Porter) Black as shown by their wills:

  • On 15 Sep 1801, Samuel Price and wife Margaret were called legatees of her father Samuel Black at Augusta County, VA.[1]
  • She was called daughter Margaret Price by the will of Jean/Jane PORTER dated 15 Mar 1814 at Augusta County, VA.[2]

This Margaret is also not the wife of Roger Poling since she is too young to be the mother of Roger's daughter, Margaret (Poling) Ricketts.

More research required regarding connection of Poling-246 as daughter. Dates too close to make this possible.
