Biography

Birth

Mary was born in 1840 in Wisconsin Territory. Both her parents were born in what is now Illinois. (1900 census)

Names

In her daughter Edith's marriage record of 1908, her name was given as Cinch-a-a, which is not a properly formed named in Hocąk. However, the 1898 census has the form Sench-ae-ae-kaw, which is for Sįceéka, "Bushy Tail", a Wolf Clan personal name. Sįceéka is from sįc, "tail", eek, a contraction of hehek, "bushy"; and -ka, a definite article suffix used in personal names. That she was a member of the Wolf Clan is further suggested by her surname of "Black Wolf", which may reflect a descent from Black Wolf himself.

Her Anglo name "Mary" is recorded in the Late Rave - Edith Earth marriage license of 1901 and on her daughter Harriet's Social Security claim.

Marriage

She married My Soul Earth in 1866 or earlier.
