Biography

Benjamin BLACKBURN was born 7 Jun 1761 In Virginia. Various family lore claims he was named Zachariah Benjamin Blackburn, additionally claiming he was born in Scotland and sailed to Colonial Virginia from England, but there have been no primary sources found to support this given name or country of origin.

He was enumerated as Benjamin Blackburn, Sr. as a resident in the Town of Augusta in Bracken County, Kentucky during the U. S. Federal Census of 1820. He bought 233 acres in Augusta from James Wells and wife by indenture dated 6 December 1830. He was again enumerated in Bracken County in both the U. S. Federal Census of 1830 and of 1840 between the age of 70-80.

Benjamin and his wife Sarah were together recorded on an indenture selling one acre of his roughly 133 acres in Bracken County, which had been condemned because of a nearby mill. He sold his remaining land in Bracken County on 22 March 1843 to a man named Robert Booth, but had yet to receive payment for the land, requiring his widow and surviving sons to make a deed to Booth after his death. Most of Benjamin's sons, with the exception of two, had prior to this time located in neighboring Pendleton County, Kentucky.

He appears to have died at age 82 on 7 September in 1843 in Pendleton County, per his grave stone in Blackburn Cemetery and administration of his estate in this location. His widow Sarah and son Kennedy appeared in Pendleton County Court on 6 Nov 1843 when Sarah relinquished her right to administer his estate and Kennedy Blackburn was granted Letters of Administration.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Benjamin by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Benjamin:

I have a Benjamin Blackburn married to a Barbara who had a daughter, Sarah Ann Blackburn born 1786- died 1836) The Maryland, Births and Christenings Index, 16662-1911 has the following information - Sarah Blackburn, born 9Nov 1786 in Christ Church, Port Republic, Calvert, Maryland, father - Benjamin Blackburn, mother Barbara FHL Film Number 13888. She married a John D Price. I'm beginning to think that there are 2 Benjamin Blackburns who have been interwined. There is no Sarah mentioned in this biography.

IS ANYONE looking for a Sarah Blackburn Price (1786-1836) can we collaborate?

Does anyone have a single credible source this man was actually named Zachariah? I have searched and searched for years and found nothing but the typical family lore mixed up stories about him and his origins. It's particularly concerning because this man continually had himself enumerated as Benjamin Blackburn, Sr., even when his son Benjamin was not his near neighbor, and I see no shred of evidence of a son named Zachariah or a grandson named after his alleged Scottish grandfather Zachariah in a family that certainly used traditional naming practices. Is it just me?
