The US Social Security Death Index gives Cleo M. Woodbury a birth date of November 9th, 1907, a death date of February 11th, 1995 with a residence in Leoti, Kansas.[1]
William L. and Flora E. Blackburn were married March 31, 1907, in the home of the bride’s parents one mile west of Arnold, Kansas. Following their marriage they lived in Ness City, Kansas, where their daughters Cleo and Cleta were born. In 1912 they moved to Great Bend, Kansas, where their son Clell came into this world. After a move to Salina the year 1916 found them living on the Kepple Ranch just across the county line in Logan County. This was also the year of the prairie fire which swept across the country between Wallace and the Arkansas River, and it didn’t spare the Blackburn family as everything they owned was lost. This was also a time when neighbor helped neighbor and one of their best friends, Dale Ganson, collected a little over a hundred dollars from people in the area to help them get started again.
It was following this when the family moved into Leoti, living for a time in a vacant store building next to the old Commercial Hotel on the east side of Main Street until they bought a home on South Main. Shortly after this, the home was sold and after a stay in Arnold, the spring of 1917 found them living on the Logan Ranch west of Russell Springs, Kansas, where their youngest Clyde was born. After one more move in Logan County, the Blackburn family settled permanently in Wichita County. In 1918 they lived on the Oldham Ranch northeast of Selkirk and then in 1920 moved into the sod house on the Kleymann place in the St. Theresa community. At long last the family settled down to long enough for the four of us children to attend the same school. It was also here that the writer had his first memories and made friendships which have lasted to this day. At that time the St. Theresa School was a single building where the Baucks, Wallaces, Scotts, Kleymanns, Schrecks, and the Wertz children were classmates.
Then 1924 found [them] moving three miles south to the Goetz place but luckily [they] still attended the St. Theresa School...This all changed in 1926 when [they] moved to the Dickey Ranch along Ladder Creek where you could see fish at the bottom of the creek most anywhere as the water was abundant along the stream. In 1928 another move was made to the Swan place in northeast Leoti and two years later the last move was made to the home at the corner of Second and J streets.[2]
