William was born in 1582, at Brindle, Lancashire, England, which is about 7km north of Chorley. He was baptised there at the Church of St James on 03 Aug 1582. [1] Baptism records state that his father was John Blackledge.
It is unknown who William married, or when and where.
Records of the children appear to be incomplete, and it is therefore unknown how many children they produced, other than William, baptised at Brindle, Lancashire, on 11 Aug 1603.
It is unknown when or where William died.
It was noted that the baptism records show that there were two children named William Blackledge born at Brindle to John Blackledge, one in 1575 [2], and the other in 1582.[3] It would appear that the first probably died in early childhood and the next male child was given the same name - a common practice. However death records for them have not been discovered.
Any further research should strive to clarify the acceptance of William (1582), and to explain the large time gap between the children's baptism dates, and establish when they died.
The surname Blackledge appears in Parish Registers etc, in a variety of phonetic spellings, eg, Blacklidge, Blakeledge, and others.
The Blackledge name is derived from a medieval village name, Black Leache, which no longer exists, but was located near the Lancashire town of Leyland. The name is widely used in the area.
