Biography

Louisa (Blackman) Simmonds is an Indigenous Australian.
Louisa was born about 1856. She passed away in 1929 at the Isis District Hospital, Childers, Queensland. Louisa was buried on 2 October 1929 at the Apple Tree Creek Cemetery, Queensland. It is unknown if Louisa and Thomas were officially divorced however Louisa is recorded as “Simmonds” on her death certificate but buried as “Blackman”.

In 1877, at the time of her marriage, Louisa is recorded as residing at Kolan the same locality as her husband, recorded as Thomas Campbell Symons.[1] They were married in the cottage of Frederick Smith at Splitter's Creek.

In 1880, at the time of her statement in the case of an alleged assault against her, Louisa stated that she was living with Mrs. Leabon at Splitter's Creek.[2]

On 18 Dec 1882, Louisa's son Alfred to John Hannah was born at Tantitha.[3]

On 12 Jan 1884, when John Hannah died in Louisa's arms, she stated she lived near Pollock's slaughter yards and that she and John had been living together for four years. John died in their tent at the Tantitha Reserve.[4]
