Biography

Jamestown ships
Nicholas arrived in Jamestown aboard the ship Francis Bonaventure in 1620.

Nicholas Blackman stated his age as forty years old in the 1625 roster at West and Shirley Hundred. Henery Benson 40, on the FrancisBonaventure, August 1620;Nicholas Blackman, 40, his partner, on the same ship.[1] This would place his year of birth at 1585. This contradicts the parish register: 15 Dec 1588: Nicolas Blackman christened at St Andrew by The Wardrobe, London, London, England.[2]

Like any census, it is possible the year of birth was recorded incorrectly, for whatever reason. Alternatively, this was a different Nicholas Blackman than the one recorded in the parish register.

Nicholas was a mariner in association with 7 men and Sir John Harvey of Virginia who helped bring puritans over to America. Henry Benson aged 40 born 1584/5 business partner of Nicolas Jan 1624/1625 place west and shirly 100 cooperation of Charles city Virginia Jerimiah Blackman and Nicolas Blackman owned the ships that brought the puritans over to the new world Name of the ships were the Expedition and Bona Vista's. Nicolas Blackman who was on the 1624 records as one of the early Virginia pioneers while at Jamestown with Captain John Smith.

In 1624 Nicolas Blackman and Thomas Baugh were living in West shirey hundred and in 1625 a Thomas Baugh was living on the Collage Land in Henrico. William Ferrari and William Bass and Mrs Bass were living in Jordan's Journey and a Nicolas Billington and Richard Bridgewater and wife (eventually the same as Bridgewater) in the Main near James City and a John and Sarah Woodson in Flower de Hundred. We first find the name John Jefferson among the residents of Elizabeth City 1624 (and one of the same names was a member of the first assembly of Virginia in 1619). It is an establishes fact that William Ferrar who lived in Jordans Journey in 1624 was the ancestor of the Henrico family of that name and the Woodsons of Henrico claim John and Sarah Woods of Flower de Hundred as their ancestors and while circumstantial evident points to a close connection it must be stated that no proof of the claim has been produced. [3]

It has also been so far impossible to prove any connection between the Henrico families of Blackman and Baugh Bass Billington Bridgewater and Jefferson and Nicolas Blackman. Thomas Baugh William Bass Nicolas Billington Richard Bridgewater and John Jefferson whose names appear in the list of 1624.

There was a Jeremy Blackman (Mariner) who had a patent 14 May 1646 for 400 acres on south side James River Henrico (now Chesterfeild County) south of Christopher Branch's land. [4]

These patents were granted to Royall and Shepp in 1635 and 1637 with the state mentioned that they were not the persons whose families the list of 1624 it will be found that most of the men whose names are given in the list if they or their heirs ever received patents did not receive them until late some years after coming to the colony. in the cases if servants the reason is obviously.

30 May 1638: Marriage of Nicholas Blackman and Mary Boule at Brenchley, Kent, England.[5]

6 Jan 1645: Burial of Mary, wife of Nicholas Blackmore at Brenchley, Kent, England.[6]

It is improbable that Nicholas lived to 108. while not unheard of, I would suspect the Nicholas Blackman listed as dying in 1696 would more likely be a son or nephew. Has anyone looked into this or is it cut and paste?

I would tend to agree with you Chad. Only one son (Jeremiah) is mentioned. However I am sure Nicholas had more than that. He was also married at least once prior to Maria Boule whom it appears he married in May of 1638 (Nicholas would have been 50 at the time and Maria about 48). Son Jeremiah was probably born about 1608 and thus would not have been the son of Maria (see comments under Jeremiah).

I have put a link to Jeremy’s Will on his profile. I was going to transcribe but someone already has. He had a brother Joseph and at least two sisters

Children, Jeremy, William, Maurice, Susan, Lucie (son) by his second wife, Elizabeth Lucie he was her second husband. I would bet my bottom dollar he wasn’t from Sussex, Essex or Norfolk is my bet. I think Nicholas and wife should be detached.

Warning: Check the data.
  • A birth date (Blackman-572 born 15 Dec 1588) should not be within eight months of a sibling's birth date (Blackman-3186 born 1 Feb 1589) unless they are twins born within a day of each other.

It may be that the 1 Feb 1589 date is actually 1589/90, (the official new year beginning in March), which would fix the issue (change datafield from 1589 to 1590 & ensure text notes 1589/90).
