Joel Horace Blackmer was a son (and the only child) of Dr. Rollin Clinton Blackmer and his wife Helen (Tarleton) Blackmer. He was born on 29 July 1887 in St. Louis, Missouri.
He volunteered for military service during World War I. According to his uncle Alven M. Smith, he was sent to Paris, France, where he did "clerical work at headquarters."[1]
In 1930, the U.S. Census recorded 71-year-old widow Helen Blackmer at 6778 Manchester Avenue in St. Louis, head of a household that also included her unmarried son "Joe" Blackmer, 41, and her sister Dora Graham, 72 and also a widow. Joe worked as a salesman in the "brick-tin" industry, and the women had no occupations. Their home was valued at $5000.[2] At about that same time, Alven Smith reported that Joel was employed as a salesman for the Hydraulic Brick Co. of St. Louis.[1]
