Biography

Wright Atticus Dickerson Blackwell

  • Since he commonly used on his initials, W A D, his name has been often cunfused and mistakenly recorded. His name is first found in the Family Bible written out as Wright Atticus Dickerson Blackwell.
  • His first name is mistaken often for William, but it is Wright. I believe this is a family name, but I have not found a connection yet. The name Wright is found in the 1900 census records and also on his children's death certificates.
  • The A. stands for Atticus. Often people get this wrong as well, using Addison instead. Atticus is a family name, there were a few in the family. Atticus Tucker was distantly related by marriage and a supposed good friend of Wright's father. He died just before Wright was born, so I think it is likely he was named for Atticus Tucker. There was also a cousin named Atticus Jennings. He was listed as Atticus in the 1860 census.
  • Dickerson is the maiden name of his gg grandmother Agnes. Agnes Dickerson married William Jennings in Virginia. He was listed as Dickerson in the 1870 census.
  • For all his names, Wright Atticus Dickerson Blackwell most commonly used his initials. Most documents were simply W. A. D. Blackwell. I think his practice of using only initials has led to the confusion of his name.

He was born August 6 1854 in South Carolina.[1] He was the son of James W. Blackwell and Susan Price

His father died when he was very young, and in the probate records he is in a list of his father's children recorded as his son, Richard. I believe this mistake was made because they called his "Dick" which was short for Dickerson, but is also a short form of the name Richard.[2]

Wright married Elizabeth Reid December 28, 1875 in Lincoln, Georgia.[3] It was a 1st marriage for both of them, Wright was 21 and Elizabeth 18 at the time.

The couple lived in Edgefield and together had 4 children:

Children

  1. Martha Susan "Mattie" Blackwell
  2. James William Blackwell
  3. Joseph Thomas Blackwell[4]
  4. Robert John Blackwell

Elizabeth died June 8, 1887 leaving Wright a widower. She was 29 years old at the time of her death. She is buried in Parksville Baptist Church Cemetery in McCormick, South Carolina.[5]

According to the 1900 census, around 1890, he married again to Hattie Stone. This would be her 1st marriage, and she was 19 at the time.[6]

Together they had 10 children. According to the 1910 census, Hattie was the mother of 10 children, 8 living. I have found the names of the 8 living children.[7]

  4. Patrick Henry Blackwell[10]

Wright died May 19 1904. He is buried in the Parksville Baptist Church Cemetery in McCormick, South Carolina.[1] Hattie was a widow at the age of 34 with 8 children to support. She remarried in 1909 to Levi Sumter Ridlehoover, who was over 20 years her senior. She was his 3rd wife.[7]

  • The obituary of W.A.D. Blackwell appeared in the Edgefield Advertiser as follows:
"Death of a West-Side Citizen - No community can lose a citizen of sterling worth, such as was Mr. W.A.D. Blackwell who died at his home near Parksville on Friday evening last, without feeling very keenly the loss. When such men are removed from the state of action their places are not easily filled. Mr. Blackwell was the devoted father of twelve children, four by his first marriage and eight by his second. An affectionate wife, who before her marriage was Miss Stone, survives him. The deceased was a kind and thoughtful neighbor, a friend to everybody and everybody was his friend. He was an active member of the Baptist church and a Woodman of the World and a Mason, holding the position of master in the Parksville lodge. The members of the later order laid the mortal body of their deceased brother to rest on Saturday afternoon, the Edgefield lodge being represented by O. Sheppard, Esq., and Mr. J.B. Holtiwanger. The pastor of the deceased, Rev. B.P. Mitchell, conducted the funeral."[13]
