HENRY BLAGRAVE I (HENRY2 BLAGROVE, HARRY1) was born 1633 in Chievely, Berkshire, England, and died Bef. 13 Oct 1686. He married (1) ANN WHITAKER? Bef. 22 Jan 1653/54 in Warwick Co., VA?. He married (2) MARY MANSELL AXTON Aft. 1654, daughter of DAVID MANSELL. She was born in Virginia, and died Aft. Oct 1686. Charles City.

Dawson, George Henman, John Huston, Henry (H) Charles, Thomas ( ) Fry, John Land, Tybus (+) Becket, Rich: (M) Moreland appraised the land of "William or Hugh Bullock" for satisfying Xpher Boice for the sum of 6510# Tob. & 7 bushels of Indian corn. 11 June 1653 for land at head of Warwick River.

That is to say three Calves, one Mare and one horse Colt, witness my hand this Twoo and Twentieth Day of January Anno Dom 1653 [1654]. Witness: Robert Piland, Cler Cur: Vera Copia Mr. Whitaker. Thomas Pettus of little toun in Virginia Esq. and Elizabeth his wife doe appoint our good friend Sert. Major Edward Griffith of Mulberry Island in Virginia, Gent., our attorney to act with Mr. Henry Meese, merchant, concerning 1,000 acres by pattent to Thomas Pettus in Potomak Creeke joyning the land of Thomas Pettus. Meese's offer is made by his letter for £90 sterling. Signed: Thomas Pettus, Elizabeth Pettus. Witnesses: HENRY BLAGRAVE, Timothy Grave. Recorded 13 Feb. 1660 [1661].

Condition is for John Russell's personal appearance at next court and to be of good behavior, especially towards Mary Rawlins. Signed: John Russell, Sam Tracy. Witnesses: HENRY BLAGRAVE, Joseph Croshaw.

From York County, Virginia, Records, 1659-1662, page 84: Page 124. Deposition of HENRY BLAGRAVE, age 28, says that being at Maj. Croshaw's when Mary Rawlins, servant of John Russell, made her complaint agst. her master, that he had abused and beaten her in a high nature, upon which Maj. Croshaw appointed two women to search her and enquire therein; and after their relation Maj. Croshaw requested your deponent to see the condition of her, which deponent did, finding her very much beaten and bruised upon upper part of her back, shoulders and arms, but to my judgment no to prove mortal, and on the backbone a small red swelling, and complaints of her belly and hips which I did not see, but being guilty of inward fevers,she had enough cause for same. As on other side, when Maj. Croshaw requested said Russell care for said Mary's sad condition, he replied that before he would bestow one penny on her, he would venture a hanging for her, and further saith that after her second complaint to Maj. Croshaw and committed to the Constable's hands, I then went to her and she showed me her breast, which was blackish, which was not there as your deponent saw at her first searching. Deposition of Samuel Tracy, age 30, that being appointed by Mr. HENRY BLAGRAVE's order for administration of medicine to Mary Rawlins, found her very weak and full of pain and bruises and much augmented by want of timely medicines, and in your continuance of deponent's attendance there found complaints to be real and not feigned and such as was sufficient to have rendered her incapable of future happiness, and did hear when Maj. Croshaw requested Mr. Russell to take some care of her, he replied that before he would be at a penny charge, he would venture a hanging, with other gross language, and did also see her breast, which was black and red. From York County, Virginia, Records, 1659-1662, page 80: Page 121, 25 June 1661 Court. Whereas John Russell, for his unchristianlike usage and unlawful correction toward his servant, Mary Rawlins (upon her complaint to Rt. Hon. William Berkeley, then Governor, & Maj. Joseph Croshaw's order of exam of her on Sir William Berkeley's note to him), was bound in sum of £40 for keeping the peace and good bearing towards His Majesty's liege peoples, having forfeited his bond by using uncivil contemptuous and rude language toward Maj. Joseph Croshaw, to the abuse of all Magistrates, and so forfeited his bond.Ordered he pay £40 to the King's Majesty's Treasurer and costs. Ordered that John Russell give bond with security for his good behavior till this court discharge him from same. Ordered that Mr. HENRY BLAGRAVE bring to next court an account of physick administered to Mary Rawlins, servant of John Russell, and he swearing to the prices of his means and to have order for so much as the court thinks fit.

From York County, Virginia, Records, 1659-1662, page 82: Page 122, 25 June 1661 Court. Deposition of John Horsington, age about 35, says that about 10 days since Maj. Joseph Croshaw sent Mary Rawlins, servant to John Russell, by deponent, being Constable of Marston Parish, to detain her till next York Court. Same day I asked her what she ailed, who said she was sorely bruised with stripes and she vomited blood 2 or 3 times, a pint at least each time. Next day deponent went to Maj. Croshaw and told him what she said and told him she wanted a physician, who thereupon sent Mr. BLAGRAVE with your deponent, who demanding where her pains lay, she said in small of her back and showed him (and this deponent saw also) marks of blows on her breast, but when or by whom deponent knows not, further saith she takes but very little rest in the night. From York County, Virginia, Records, 1659-1662, page 112: In 9th Sept. 1661, Mrs. Graves having a cancerous ulcer in her instep, with other internal distemper, sent for me. I coming there found Mr. Napier, whom having some conference touching her present condition, and finding his wants of some necessary medicines at that time, offered him any I had by me, in regard place and person so remote from me, it would not suit with my other nearer employments, and concluded at next coming thither to bring necessary medicines, expecting he had made it his business to apply what I had left in the interim. I understood that in all the time he had not acted anything, her condition requiring present and diligent assistance (my credit being concerned by my former applications, did make it my business to wait upon her till she was perfectly cured and recovered). DAVID MANSFIELD, who assigned & made over in marryage unto Mr. HENRY BLAGRAVE and MARY his wife, daughter of said DAVID, who sold to Edward Carey, decd., and Axton, and now due said Axton by survivorship.

STAFFORD COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEED AND WILL BOOK, 1686 - 1689; THE ANTIENT PRESS p. 38 WM. HORTON aged Sixty one yeares or thereabouts Subp: Sworne & Examined saith that ye Dept. Very well Remembers that sometime in July or Augt, 1660 to ye best of yor Depts. memory bee this Dept. and EDWARD CARY mett with Mr. HENRY BLAGRAVE at ye house of WM. NEWELL at the Middle Planton and there the sd CARY pcbased of ye sd Blagrave Six hundred acres of land lying on ye South side of POTOMACK CREEK for F'ourteene hundred pounds of Tobo &Caske and he this Deponent did then and there draw a Convey of the same in the Name of the said BLAGRAVE unto the sd CARY & JNO. AXTON and he this Depot_ was Surity with the sd CARY unto the sd BLAGRAVE for ye sd One thousand Five hundred and nine pounds of Tobo and the next Winter there came a Certificate unto this Depots. hand and the hand of Mr. FRANCIS KIRKMAN Clerke of ye Genii. Court that upon a Certaine day HENRY BLAGRAVE and MARY his Wife came into open Court and acknowd. ye Sale of ye sd Six hundred acres of hind unto ye sd CARY and AXTON and yor Dept. Very well knows that ye sd CARY & AXTON pd ye said Tobo and further saith not. WM, HORTON And further yor Dept. sayth that he this Dept, haxh heard that CAPT. DAVID MANSFIELID Father of the said MARY, did give the sd Land unto ye sd MARY but in wt, manor yor Dept_ knows not WM, HORTON Sworne and Recorded in the County Court of Stafford this 10 day of March 1686/7

DAVID MANSFIELD where this Dept. & ye sd Mr. GREGG the sd NELSON entered into discourse with ye sd MARY concerneinge ye Sale of Six hundred acres of land situate & being on ye South side of POTTOMACK CREEKE in this ye sd County and sd MARY .... her sd husband BLAGRAVE to JNO. AXTON & EDW CARY late of ye sd County (part whereof is still in Question) MARY declared yet she & her sd Husband BLAGRAVE sold ye sd Six hundred acres of land to ye sd JOHN AXTON & EDWD. CARY & yt her sd husband did acknowledge the Deede of Sale thereof to AXTON & CARY at ye Genll. Court at JAMES TOWNE, and further declared yt for the sake of her said husband BLAGRAVE she would truely have parted wth all shee hade or words purporting ye same & further Deposeth that this Descourse was some few days after sd GOWRY had purchased ye sd Land & that she then further Declared yt ye sd GOWRY had cheated her Sone in Lawe & that he should not have the sd Land nor any other hereof ye sd AXTON & further deposeth not GERRARD LOWTHER Recorded in ye County Courte of Stafford this 9 day of June 1687
