He was baptised by the Reverend Dr. Robert Smith Candlish, considered by admirers a leading evangelical of his generatioh, on "Sabbath, the Ninth January" seven weeks after his birth.
He started a career as an engineer in the Department of Public Works in India. This was not an ideal basis for family life, however, and in 1879 he started, with a former college chum, the printing firm which became T & A Constable of Edinburgh.
Married, 31st July 1873, Janet Marshall Macfie (born 18th June 1852; died 30th June 1942).
He is also recognized as a leading historian of the Jacobite Rebellions, especially by those who believe that the wrong side won. He himself found that the more he knew of 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' the less he liked the fellow. Nevertheless, that did not undermine his respect for the legitimacy of the Stuart cause in the war with the English.
In infancy he had the same nurse as his distant cousin, the writer Robert Louis Stevenson.Walter was the son of William Garden Blaikie and Margaret Catherine Biggar. He married Janet Marshall Macfie.
Walter died on 3 May 1928.[1]
