Jane Blaikie was born in 1811 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to George D Blaikie and Mary Moore. She married Abraham Holmes Hoge in 1831 and had thirteen children. She passed away in 1890 at Chicago, IL.
Mrs. Hoge was a welfare activist, US Civil war nurse, and member of Evanston College for Ladies Board of Trustees and fund-raiser. Her sons George and Holmes were officers in the Union Army during the US Civil War.
During the US Civil War, she shared the duties of associate manager at the Chicago Sanitary Commission with Mary Livermore. Mrs. Hoge was very familiar with parliamentary rules of order and was known for effectively chairing meetings that produced results, as well as being known as a strong speaker. She traveled widely during her tenure, visiting army hospitals, Ladies Aid societies which were providing goods for army hospitals, and tending to business with other branches of the US Sanitary Commission.
