William was the son of Charles Blain and Margaret Brice of Killybegs, Donegal, Ireland. He was born around 1799, and was one of six known children of Charles and Margaret. Three of his brothers, George Blain, Arbuthnot Blain, and Charles Blain emigrated to Lancashire , England as young adults, and established successful businesses there. William, his brother Thomas Blain, and his sister Margaret Blain remained behind in Killybegs and continued the family's successful corn distribution and grocery businesses. [1]William also had at least one ship, the Mary Blain, plying a regular transatlantic route between Killybegs and New York. The corn store, which the Blain family purchased from one Richard Nesbitt, still stands today.[2]He married Phoebe Hamilton around 1823 and with her had five children. William Blain died on 16 Dec 1848 and was buried in St Catherine's Cemetery in Killybegs.[3][4]
