Jean (Blair) Blair

Jean Blair was born in Scotland, daughter of Archbald Blair,[1][2] on 26 Oct 1736.[3] She is frequently referred to as just Jean Balfour or Jean Balfour daughter of Archbald Blair. Is this her middle name?

While John Blair was living in London, he married his cousin, Jean Blair , December 16, 1756, in Edinburgh, Scotland. [1][2] Together they lived in Williamsburg, Virginia and raised six children, four of which lived to be adults. Jean died in 1792, leaving John a widower.[2]

Jean died in Williamsburg, on November 22, 1792. She is buried at the Bruton Parish Church Cemetery. Her epitaph, printed on the stone covering her son James' grave, gives us a picture her character:

In the adjoining grave lies deposited
with her husband whatever was mortal of
Jean Blair,
who was born 26thOctr 1736, O.S.
and died 22nd Novr 1792
Her conduct through life was truly exemplary and
amiable in discharging all the relative duties of her
station as a wife, mother and a friend; and her piety
shone forth with peculiar lustre during a protracted,
painful, and distressing illness, which she sustained
without a murmur, with entire resignation and
acknowledgments of the divine mercy and goodness;
and fervent prayers to be released, and, resign her
spirit to God Who gave it.

CHILDREN It is frequently stated that John and Jean had no children or an unknown amount of children. They had children, and a few grandchildren, but all died young, so John and Jean Blair have no descendants.

  • Two children died in infancy.[2]. Chritian (Christian?) b. 1765 child of John Jr. and Jane Blair.[4]
  • Child died in infancy. This may be Helen recorded at the Bruton Church. Hellen b. 1759 d/o John Jr and Jane Blair[5], but Nelly is a nickname for Helen so this may be Nelly and the sixth child's name remains unknown.
  • Nelly Blair died in her early teens.[2]
  • Mary Blair married Robert Andrews of William and Mary College. They had no children.[2]
  • Jane Blair married James Henderson. Jenny's four children died before reaching adulthood.[2] b. 1760
  • James Blair died at age 21[2] b. 1770.
