Biography

John L. Blair, 1814-1887, was born in Maryland, the son of Andrew Jackson Blair (1783-1849) and Catherine Onwiler (1790-1855), who married in 1803 and had thirteen children, born between 1812 and 1830. John married Sarah Rickert (1812-1898) on 12 December 1836. They had three children, Susan, Martin L., and Sarah Jane. [1] John and Sarah married in Washington County, Maryland. [2]

In 1850, the Blair family lived in Montgomery,mFranklin, Pennsylvania. The three children were in school. The household included

  • John Blair, 36, born in Maryland, a farmer, with $550 in real estate
  • Sarah Blair 37 Maryland
  • Susan Blair 10 Pennsylvania
  • Martin Blair 8 Pennsylvania
  • Sarah Blair 6 Pennsylvania [3]

In 1860, the Blair family lived in Montgomery Township, Franklin, Pennsylvania. The family included

  • John Blair, 46, born in Maryland, a farmer, with $1200 in real estate and $600 in personal estate
  • Sarah Blair 47 Maryland
  • Susan Blair 19 Maryland
  • Martin Blair 18 Pennsylvania, a farm hand, in school
  • Sarah Blair 16 Pennsylvania, in school [4]

NOTE: on the Census for 1850 and for 1860, a neighbor of the Blairs was the Zuck family (three generations). Martin Blair would later marry a Zuck daughter, Barbara Ann Zuck (1851-1949).

In 1880, the Blair family lived in Welsh Run, Montgomery Township, Franklin, Pennsylvania. John Blair, 66, helps on (his son’s) farm. His wife, Sarah, was 67. Living nearby (or on same property) was their son, Martin L. Blair, 38, a farmer; his wife, Barbara, 28; five children; and a servant. [5] [6]

John Blair, 1813-1887, died, aged 73, in Welsh Run, Franklin, Pennsylvania. He is buried with his wife and two of their children, and other family, at Welsh Run Brethren Church Cemetery, Welsh Run, Pennsylvania. [7]
