O b i t u a r y [11]

At her home near Chicago, KY on Monday, 27th of last month (2/27/1882), of old age, Mrs. Sallie Alvey in her 85th year. For the seven or eight months previous to her death she had been confined to her room and the last three or four months were attended with much suffering and pain. which she bore with Christian patience and fortitude. She died, as she had lived, a true Christian, fortified by the sacraments of the Catholic Church, of which she had been a consistent practical member all her life. She was a daughter of Peter Blair, who emigrated from St Mary's Co MD to this part of Kentucky in an early day. before the subject of this sketch was born. She has lived in this immediate neighborhood all her life and has always commanded the respect and esteem of all who knew her. Her husband Jessie Alvey died some thirty-five years ago, and she remained a widow until her death. There is but one of her brothers or sisters that survive her, Mrs. Betsy Blair, some two or three years her junior. She was the mother of 11 children, 3 of whom preceded her to the grave. She leaves 47 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren, making the whole number of her descendants living, 90, almost all of whom together with a large number of other relatives and friends attended her funeral, which took place on the second day after her death. Her remains were interred in the churchyard at Chicago (St Francis Assisi Catholic Cemetery, St Francis, KY) after a high requiem Mass, Rev Father Drury officiating at the altar, and Miss Mattie Ferriell at the organ, assisted by the other members of the choir. The writer has known the deceased for more than a half-century and can testify as to her enabling qualities in all the various relations of life. She was a devoted wife, a kind and affectionate mother.
