Biography

According to a Wilmot Genealogy book from 1940, "Mary Blair Wilmot" was born November 6, 1831, in Mantua, Portage, Ohio. This would make her just 10 years younger than Samuel Pearce Snow, born in August 1821, also in Mantua, Portage, Ohio. Mary's father was Elihu Wilmot, b: Feb. 26, 1789 in New Haven Co., Connecticut, and her mother was Lucretia (Blair) Wilmot, b: 1790 in Massachusetts.[1]

So far as is known, Mary Wilmot was still unmarried when, in September 1869, Samuel Pearce Snow, a widower with 7 children, returned to Mantua, Portage, Ohio, and married her. They were wed at the Portage Court House on September 25, 1869.[2]

The 1870 US Census reports them living on a farm in Neosho County, Kansas, with 6 of Samuel's 7 children (Melvin M. Snow, age 14, is missing from the list).[3]

In 1875, Samuel and Mary (Wilmot) Snow moved their family from the Middle West to Santa Barbara County, California. The settled on a ranch in Hopes Precinct there, where they were living for the 1880 US Census.[4] Note that Samuel's son, Melvin M. Snow, is back on the list as a School Teacher and his two youngest sons have different Given names (Laurin is now called Arthur; Arthur is called Charles). Mary W. Snow has lost 8 years off her 1831 birth.
